Free Hip-Hop Concert: Shai Linne

On Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., Midland will be hosting one of the most doctrinally-sound, Scripture-saturated hip-hop artist of our generation.  His most recent album is taken from A.W. Pink’s classic work and shares the same title “The Attributes of God.”  Here is a link to a video of Shai Linne rapping and sharing the gospel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPZlzDTdSsE. You can also hear some of his songs about God’s holiness and wrath and His mercy and grace or even His sovereignty. Please help us spread the word.  To God alone be the glory!

Shai Linne is a recording artist with Lamp Mode Recordings (www.lampmode.com), an independent Christian hip-hop record label whose mission is to highlight the character of God, while presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ and a biblical worldview through hip-hop culture. Shai is a theologian, poet, and pastor-in-training, having just completed a pastoral internship at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington D.C., where he is a member. Shai has appeared on numerous independent and national Christian hip-hop releases and has released three solo projects: The Solus Christus Project (2005), The Atonement (2008) and Storiez (2008). His most recent album is The Attributes of God (2011). Shai lives in Washington D.C. with his wife Blair. Visit him at www.myspace.com/shailinne and http://lyricaltheology.blogspot.com/.

Definite Atonement

I love the lyrics of the song, “Now Why This Fear,” because it captures so much of the practical benefit of the atonement. The song was originally written by Augustus Toplady, the same guy who wrote “Rock of Ages.” The original language of “Now Why This Fear” was a bit archaic, so it was revised by Doug Plank, with Sovereign Grace Worship. Here are the new lyrics: [Read more…]

Why We Need to Study the Bible

We are currently going through Journey Into God’s Word in Sunday School.  This past week, we discussed the following from Pastor John Macarthur about why we need to study the word.  I would add that the reasons given also explain why we’re having a Sunday School class on understanding God’s word, and why we preach expositionally every week. Digital Detox?

As we’ve come to the end of our current Sunday School, Resolving Everyday Conflict, we felt the need to the address the topic of Conflict and Social Media.  That message from this past Sunday is available here. One of the points made in that talk was the importance of personal, human interaction.  While digital interaction can be a blessing in so many ways and can certainly be used redemptively, it should never become a means of avoiding actual conversations and face-to-face interaction. Rest in the Work, Not From It

Charles Bridges was a pastor, writer, and leader in the Church of England in the mid-1800s.  In his book The Christian Ministry, his chapter on faith is well worth the read. [Read more…]

A New Affection Drives Out Old Affections

The Scottish preacher Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) preached a sermon that ended uo having lasting influence for many generations of Christians.  It’s title had to be in the Top Ten greatest titles of the second millennium. The title itself is worth meditating on.  And as good titles do, it captures the essence of the sermon.  It was called [Read more…]

“Hell is eternity in the presence of God without a Mediator”

This quote by Ligon Duncan was mentioned in the sermon on Sunday in the context of the text in Luke 13:10-35.  Specifically, how does this statement square with Jesus warning that he will say “Depart from me all you workers of evil”?  Hell is often depicted as the absence of God.  How are we to understand God’s presence and the Biblical doctrine of hell?

What is the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

First of all, it’s pronounced “blas-feh-mee,” not “blas-fem-nee.”

The reason we wanted to address this often confusing subject is because it came up recently in the text as we were going through Luke.  Since it’s almost impossible to spend an adequate amount of time on the topic in one sermon and still cover the rest of the text, making a blog post about it seemed to be a good way to deal with it.  (This was also made available in print the following Sunday.)

Welcome to the Pastors Blog!

From time to time, we hope to use this blog to supplement the Sunday sermons, discuss relevant topics to our church and our culture, and to provide another point of equipping for the body of Christ.  We make no promises as to how often this blog will be updated.  But we encourage you to subscribe to the blog feed in your email or your favorite feed burner.

And we’d love to hear from you in our comments section.  All comments will be moderated by us personally.  Thanks for stopping by!
