Foundations Class

Genesis: Where It All Begins

Genesis2

Please join us in Sunday School this Spring as we study the book of Genesis together.  The first few chapters of Genesis lay important foundations for understanding the rest of the Bible.  It also gives us the foundation we need for several issues relevant to our world today – creation/evolution, intelligent design, racism, the sanctity of human life, biblical manhood and womanhood, gender identity, marriage, procreation, work and business, stewardship of the earth’s resources, finances, world missions, and even global warming.  We will be looking at the Bible storyline of redemption as well as a number of contemporary issues in order to establish a fully Biblical worldview.  All of this and more is provided for us in Genesis. We hope to see you there! Sunday School is from 9:15-10:15 in the fellowship hall.

Gift and Giver

GiftGiver4

This timely study for our church will examine the work, power, gifts, and ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian. It will combine pastoral teaching with class discussion. The book Gift and Giver is by Craig Keener and will provide the outline for each class.

Pastor Billy says, “This study on the continuing work, gifts, and active presence of the Holy Spirit is uniquely important as it is one of our core values as a church family. It is especially timely as we seek the Spirit’s power for ministry and mission. The Bible teaches us that the filling of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is necessary for a marriage that displays the gospel, for parents seeking to disciple their children, for doing spiritual warfare, for encouraging one another in the body of Christ, and for evangelism and mission both locally and globally.”

Books are available (but not at all required) for $20. Sunday School starts at 9:15.  We hope you will join us!

Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands

We might be relieved if God placed our sanctification only in the hands of trained professionals, but that is not his plan.  Instead, through the ministry of every part of the body, the whole church will mature in Christ.  This series will help us discover where change is needed in our own lives and in the lives of others.  Understanding the Bible’s process for change will transform how we think about helping others.  There will be a video, followed by a discussion of the material.  Workbooks are available upon request.  Please join us for this eye-opening study!

A God-Sized Vision

Is it possible we don’t see God working in mighty ways because we don’t ask him to work in mighty ways? Throughout history, God has used revival to build and renew his church. God-Sized Vision challenges us to pray expectantly to see his work in our own day. God can bring revival again to our community, our country, and our world. Our faith grows stronger when we learn how God worked in the past. The historical stories of worldwide revivals in this book enlarge our hearts and expand our minds as we see God at work in human history with a power that is still available to the faithful today. Here scholars Collin Hansen and John Woodbridge recount the fascinating details of world-changing revivals, beginning with biblical events and continuing through the Reformation, the Great Awakenings, the Welsh and Korean revivals, the East Africa Revival of the 1930s, and more recent revivals in North America and China. What did these revivals have in common? How can we prepare for—and expect—revival in our own culture? With accessible language and gripping examples, Hansen and Woodbridge explore these questions and more, strengthening our understanding of God’s work while deepening our faith in the possibility of revival—right where we are.

Journey Into God’s Word

Life is a journey, and like any journey, it requires an accurate, reliable roadmap to get us where we need to go. God has provided such a guide in his Word. But just as a navigator needs to learn how to interpret all the contours and symbols of a map, so also we need to be able to understand how the Bible communicates its directions to us. Journey into God’s Word helps Bible readers acquire these skills and become better at reading, interpreting, and applying the Bible to life.

from p. 11-12: “Some  parts of the Bible are easy to understand, but much of it is not. Most Christians, however, desire to understand all of God’s Word, not just the easy portions. Many of us want to be able to dig deeper into that Word. We want to see more and to understand more of the biblical text. We also want to know that we understand the Bible correctly. That is, we want to be confident that we can pull the actual truth out of a text and not just develop an arbitrary, fanciful, or incorrect interpretation. This book is designed for such people.”

Resolving Everyday Conflict

From the back of the book: “Everyone encounters conflict – whether it be with a co-worker, family member, friend, or complete stranger. And yet we all desire harmony in out relationships. Resolving Everyday Conflict is a practical, biblical, and concise guide to peacemaking in everyday life that can turn your troubled relationships into peaceful ones.

“With proven advice found in this book, authors Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson show you how to achieve not only a cease-fire but also unity and harmony. Their biblical guidance will take you beyond resolving conflicts to true, life-changing, reconciliation with family, co-workers, and fellow believers.”

The God Who is There

from the back of the book: “Do you really know what the Bible is about?  Most people – even most Christians – do not have a basic working knowledge of the Bible.  How can we understand the story of God – and our part in it – when we’re not familiar with it?  In this basic introduction to faith, D.A. Carson takes you through the big story of Scripture to help you know what you believe and whyyou believe it.”  This Sunday School class is an overview of the redemptive storyline of the Bible as it unfolds progressively from Genesis to Revelation.  This is a video series with occasional discussions to follow.  There is no required reading, although books are available for anyone interested.  We hope you join us for this exciting overview of God’s word.  Watch or listen online here.
